Mangere Combined tennis players gained ten finals placings at the recent championships held at the Waikato Tennis Centre from December 27 - 30, 2007 with Tracey O'Connor winning the open singles and doubles, Tracey's and other members who reached finals and their results are:

27th World ITF Super-Seniors Teams & Individual Championships
The teams and Individual Championships were hosted by Tennis Seniors NZ & Canterbury Tennis at Ashburton, Wilding Park and Hagley park in Christchurch 26 November to 8 December 2007
Mangere Combined were represented by Alan Chester in the teams & Individuals and Dick Garratt in the Individuals. Alan was captain of the NZ 65+ Mens team which finished 11th out of 14 Countries.Alan winning 3 out of his 5 singles in the number one position.
In the Individuals, 65+ Alan Chester lost in the first round to Bruce Rehn (Australia) 6/3 4/6 6/1 but Alan went on to win the World Consolation singles defeating Berend Lenten (Netherlands) in the final 6/3 7/5 - congratulations Alan. Alan teamed up with Paddy Kelly (Palmerston North) in the doubles, winning their first round against a Mexican pair but losing the next against the Australians Schroder/Waygood 6/4 6/2
Dick Garratt in the 60+ Singles won his first round against Yuzo Katsuta (Japan) 6/0 6/0 then lost to the 4th seeded American Michael Beautyman 6/1 6/3 Dick teamed up with Bruce Cocking (Te Kuiti) in the doubles losing their first round against Hoefling/Thaler (Austria) 6/3 6/2
Waatea603am Mangere Combined - Caro Bowl Champions for 2007
Mangere Combined women's Caro Bowl team hosted and defeated Royal Oak on Friday 30 November in front of a big home crowd 4-2. In its five year entry into Caro Bowl Mangere now has two wins and one runner up. The final was captured on Maori Television news and highlights broadcast on Radio Waatea. Guests included Waatea sponsor Willie Jackson and Kaumatua Jim Perry, Caro Bowl sponsor Brian & Maryrose Scarborough, Richard Palmer of Auckland Tennis and supporters from the Royal Oak Racquettes club.
The win was a highlight for the senior members of the team, Rewa Harriman, Shelley Bryce and Tracey O'Connor, these former Internationals were the mainstay of the team, ably supported by Manumea Durie and Kataraina Hunia.
Waatea603am defeat reigning champions in semi-finals
Mangere Combined hosted Parnell Friday 23 November and defeated the strong Parnell team led by former world top 60 player Pavlina Nola and former NZ Rep Niki Tippins by an astonishing clean sweep at 6-0. This was an outstanding performance and the whole team needs to be congratulated along with Manageress Desrae Garratt and the club supporters.
The team and club supporters are looking forward to hosting Royal Oak in next weeks final.
World ITF Super-Seniors Teams & Individual Championships
Alan Chester will Captain the 65+ NZ men's team for the Britannia Cup World Teams Championships in Ashburton from Sunday 25 Nov to Saturday 1 December, Alan will be joined in the team by Bill Thom, Paddy Kelly and former MCTC member Joe Tamati.
Alan will then compete in the ITF World Individual Super-Seniors 65+ Singles in Christchurch from Dec 2 onwards.
Dick Garratt, who was unavailable for the Teams event due to his hosting of the National Maori Sports Awards in Rotorua will compete in the ITF World Individual Super-Seniors 60+ Singles in Christchurch.

Waatea603am Mangere Combined Women's team finish top!
Round 7, Friday 16 November, the last game in round robin play, Mangere Combined finished top with 48 points followed by Royal Oak 43, Mission Bay 35 and Parnell 34. These are the top four teams heading into the semi finals next Friday with Mangere hosting Parnell and Royal Oak hosting Mission Bay.
Mangere hosted Kohimarama with a traditional Maori powhiri, this was in respect of the Scarborough whanau, major sponsors of the Scarbro Caro Bowl and Auckland Tennis and the Maori and Polynesian make up of both teams. The powhiri was carried out by local Te Kura Kaupapa Maori a Rohe o Mangere headed by Kaumatua Abe Rangi and Kura Principal Lucy Te Moana. Visiting Dignitaries included Brian, Maryrose and Gary Scarborough, Auckland President Roger and Mara Harvey, Kohimarama sponsors and club members. Mangere was well supported by its club members and the Powhiri was marked with an appearance by Waatea603am sponsor and well known ex politician and Mayoral candidate Willy Jackson.
The tie went Mangere's way 5-1 with Kohi's outstanding number one player Kairangi Vano disposing of Luci Barlow in straight sets for their only win.

Waatea603am defeat 2006 Caro Bowl Champions!
Round 6, Friday 9 November Mangere hosted 2006 champions Parnell, Parnell fielded their strongest combination, but Mangere produced their best team performance with a 5-1 win. The contest got off to a good start with Mangere winning both doubles, then Shelley Bryce in her first singles and Tracey O,Connor crushing their opponets Jo Carswell and Niki Tippins. In the top singles spot saw Luci Barlow and former world top 60 player Pavlina Nola battle out a tough three sets with the experienced Pavlina winning in what was regarded as the best Women's singles match this season, Pavlina acknowledging that as her toughest match. Manumea Durie fought hard for a three set win in the no. 4 singles spot over Ingela Derlin. Mangere hosts Kohimarama at home next Friday 16 November in the last match of the round, with placings for third and fourth place really close, as Semi-finals start the following week with Mangere (1) hosting the fourth place team and Royal Oak (2) will play the third placed team.

Round 5, Friday 2 November, hosted at the Remuera Club. The girls had another solid win, this time 6-0 with all having strong performances. Rewa and Shelley's experience in a 6/1 6/1 win in the bottom doubles and Luci Barlow's victory in the top singles 6/7 6/3 7/5 after being down 1/5 in the third set. Round 6 Mangere host's Parnell at home.

Shelley Bryce (nee Stephens) returns to Caro Bowl
Round 4, Friday 26 October saw the return to Caro Bowl Tennis by former touring pro, Fed Cup player, NZ No.1 and Maori champion Shelley Bryce. Shelley teamed up with her former Fed Cup team member Rewa Harriman in the bottom doubles. Both mothers (Shelley recently gave birth to her second child and Rewa is pregnant with her second child due early in 2008) after a rusty start they finished up with a solid win, helping the Waatea603am team to another soild 5-1 win, this time against Pompallier. The team leads the competition by 4 points over nearest rival Royal Oak.

Presentation to Sir Barry Curtis
A carved 'Patu' was presented to Sir Barry Curtis on behalf of the Mangere Combined Tennis Club, the Manukau Rovers Rugby Club and Te Tira Hou Sports & Cultural Club, at a special farewell function at the Telstra Clear Events Centre on Friday 12 October, as a tribute to his support of the clubs during his long reign as Mayor of Manukau City.
Caro Bowl Women lead the competition!
Round 3, Friday 12 October, with another solid win, this time against Glen Eden for a 5-1 result. The only loss was Manumea Durie at no 3 singles in three sets. Kataraina Hunia played her first singles after returning from Melbourne representing the NZ U/14 team. This allowed Rewa Harriman tp play doubles only. Points after 3 rounds:Mangere Combined 19, Royal Oak 17, Kohimarama 16, Parnell 11, Remuera 10, Pompalier 8, Mission Bay 7, Glen Eden 5.
Waatea603am Mangere Combined's next match is against Pompalier away on Friday 26 October.
Waatea603am Mangere Combined Women's Caro Bowl
Round 2. Friday 5 Oct, hosted at Mission Bay, the team won a hard fought encounter 4-2 over the strong Mission Bay team. Captain Rewa Harriman shone in the bottom doubles and outlasted her opponent in the singles, Maumea Durie backed up with another solid win at no 4 singles, but the singles win by our 'pint sized battleship' Luci Barlow at No 1 over former NZ No1 & touring pro Ilke Gers 6-0 in the third set, showed just how fit and determined a player she is. Mention must be made of Tracey O'Connors 3 sets against Tanya Samodelok (currently playing Junior Tournaments throughout the world)Tracey is starting to hit her straps and will be hard to beat at No2 singles.

Waatea603am Mangere Combined Women's Caro Bowl
Last Friday night the 28 Sept, saw our Caro Bowl team start with a good 4-2 win over a strong Royal Oak team at home, stand out performances were both doubles with Tracey O'Connor and Manumea Durie in the singles, the small but supportive crowd witnessed some top tennis for this first round fixture.
Australian Seniors
On thursday 20 September 2007, Mangere Combined, hosted on behalf of South Auckland Seniors Tennis Assoc.The 'Poynter Plate' Australian Tennis Seniors.This 30 strong group was on the last leg of their NZ Tour, where they were hosted by and played against; Warkworth,North Harbour, Tauranga, Te Aroha, Waikato and South Auckland.
South Pacific Games
Mangere's two top male players, Utu Tuima and Kruger Maasi, competed for Tonga in the recent South Pacific Games held at Apia in Samoa during August. While they performed well, New Caledonia (all French players) were too strong.

New caro bowl women’s sponsor
Urban Māori Radio Station, Waatea 603am will be the principal sponsor of the Caro Bowl team as they attempt to go one better than last years runner up position and repeat their 2004 win, The team will be captained by Waatea Māori news reader Rewa Harriman (Hudson) with Luci Barlow, Manumea Durie, Kataraina Hunia and coached by Shelley Bryce (Stephens) and managed by Dick & Desrae Garratt.
Waatea Managing Director and Manukau Mayoral candidate, Willie Jackson is thrilled to be part of this team, supporting the local Mangere Community, the base of his Radio Station and home to his sporting background.
85th Season opening & blessing
Mangere celebrated its 85th Season Opening and the blessing of its new Tennis courts and court fencing project on Saturday 1st September 2007.
The blessing was carried out by Tainui kaumatua Eru Thompson, officially opened by Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis and the opening ball served by Mangere Caro Bowl Captain Rewa Harriman (Hudson).
Features of the opening included Stewart Rennie, the oldest surviving club champion at the age of 90 and was made a life member during the celebrations.
Dignatories included Colin Dale, Alf Filipaina, MCC Mangere Community Board Members, Pub Charity Representatives, Brian Scarborough and Alan Chester.
